    Blaneys insurance associate, Bradley Wells, is one of four professionals who provided comments for “The Future of Integrity”, part of the CIP Society Ethics Series, in the November 2011 issue of Canadian Underwiter magazine.  In the article, commenting on the mentoring tradition in the insurance industry, Mr. Wells remarks that as junior professionals gain experience they “should be encouraged to participate in the mentoring process…continuing the existing cycle…”.

    David Thera, who practices in McKercher’s Regina office, was elevated to President of the Canadian Bar Association, Saskatchewan Branch for 2011-2012.   David has been active in the CBA at the Branch level in various sections, serving as Chair of the Civil Litigation North Section, as Co-Chair of the 2008 Mid-Winter Meeting, as Treasurer of CBA Saskatchewan, and as Vice-President last year.     Risk Management Counsel of Canada, (RMC) is delighted to once again be exhibiting and participating at the RIMS Canada Conference. This year, RMC will present a panel discussion on current technology and the legal implications of the use, reliability and potential manipulation of social networks and other web-based information: High Tech Wizardry… White or Black Magic….?

    The discussion will examine such topics as:

    Manipulation and Traceability of Social Media Internet Information; Surveillance – Propriety of Various Methods in Accessing Social Media; and the Reliability of Social Media Information.

    In addition to RMC’s panel presentation, Kelly Santini LLP, the RMC member firm in Ottawa, will also present a panel discussion entitled The Future Plans and Future Risks of Going Green

    During this presentation, participants will hear from leading environmental engineers about the alternative energy innovations that will be entering the market in the near future. This will be followed by a panel discussion with a risk manager, insurance adjuster, broker and lawyer on the myriad of risks that must be considered and the steps the insurance industry can take to help make these new sources of energy safe and successful.

  • Blaneys Partner Successful in Appeal before Divisional Court

    Blaney McMurtry insurance partner Colin Empke was successful in a recent application before the Ontario Divisional Court, granting his client’s appeal in  the matter of Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company v. ING Insurance Company of Canada, 2011 ONSC 3841. At issue in the appeal was the interpretation of the “additional insured” endorsement of the Appellant ING’s insurance contract.

  • Blaneys Lawyer Comments on Role of Expert Witnesses

    Dr. Gary Srebrolow of the firm’s Insurance Litigation Group and chair of its Health Law group, is quoted in the May 2011 issue of Canadian Underwriter magazine in the article Silencing Hired Guns. The article looks at the effect of recent changes to the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure on the roles of expert witnesses, particularly in complex cases involving medical diagnoses. Read more.
